On Cancer and Sarah Palin

Here's something that I worked on with the fabulous Bruce Ramsay, the cover art director of Newsweek. The commission was on cancer. The roughs that we started had a lot of potential, but, alas, it didn't happen because the cover story was eventually swapped for another topic: Sarah Palin. I was excited about the scary cancer cell eating the Newsweek logo. I love the composition; it feels weightless, with all that black negative space in the lower third of the page. And I liked the second one, too, with the blue polka dots.

With the cancer cell, we had the hard task of making something so inherently ugly and creepy look attractive yet scary. Bruce kept using the phrase "ugly beauty." I'm pretty happy with the results.

Fortunately, when Sarah Palin made the cover, they decided to run the cell on the inside of the magazine as a spread.
